Hello! I’m Cathy Lapinel

Leatherwork is something I fell into and never planned on. It began with my husband — a curious fellow — who decided to try his hand at tooling a leather belt for me as a gift. He started with two belt straps, one of which ended up being my wonderful gift. The other, being too short, was inviting me to try my own hand at tooling. This small piece of leftover scrap turned into my first leather project, and the rest is history.

Following this discovery, I acquired special vintage tools and began my journey of self-teaching the art of leatherwork. Over time I discovered the beautiful variety of hides, the endless possibilities of original designs, and that my product was marketable. I am fortunate to live in Boise, ID where there’s an art-driven community with a wonderful weekly farmer’s market. It was here, at the weekly Saturday market, where I was accepted as an art vendor in 2012 and started showcasing my work. Soon after I was also accepted into various juried art shows out West, which not only expanded my horizons but also inspired me to refine my own distinct style and artistry.

If you met me 40 years ago, I would be wearing similar jeans, a simple t-shirt, silver jewelry, and an everlasting essential — a touch of leather. My fashion sense has not changed despite a lifetime of experiences. This purely down-to-earth style is reflected in my work as I strive to create timeless, functional quality that is constructed to last. The designs I produce are pieces that I would use myself. The whimsical nature of my hand tooled and painted purses are an extension of my humor. I want my customers to appreciate the uniqueness of each hide and enjoy the changing patina of the leather as it weathers and wears.

As you explore this website, I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them. Every distinctive hide I touch has a story to tell.
