Leather Facts
- Cattle, American Bison and Kangaroo are most often farmed for meat & dairy for Cattle. Leather is a byproduct. In the United States, Where all our Cowhide and Bison leather comes from, no animals are slaughtered for the sole purpose of producing leather. Kangaroo is harvested for the meat…again the leather is a byproduct.
- Leather is a renewal and natural resource. Fake leather is made from non-renewable resources
- Top Grain leather keeps the top layer which has the tightest weave. Most of the strength comes from the top layer. Except for suede, we only use Top grain leather.
- Genuine leather is usually splits that do not include the top grain at all or a product that has only 50% of it’s components made from leather.
- Bison is a much larger animal than a cow however, bison hides are generally smaller in size than cowhides because bison hides are not stretched like cowhides. Bison hides aren’t stretched so that they preserve the unique and rustic grain patterning of the bison
- Kangaroo is half the weight of cow hide but twice as strong
- Scarring such as minor healed scratches, flea bites and possible branding are natural. One of the beauties of leather is that no two hides are alike, because each hide has different markings.
- Pull-up leather has wax and oils within the hide to make it more water resistant and allow for easy removal of scratches from use.
- Embossed leather is the process of modifying the top grain of the leather to a texture that mimics a rare hide or simply has artistic value.
- Our belts are made from the more expensive, thicker and less elastic parts of the hide. Our belts won’t stretch and tear like the common belts that are typically made from the belly part of the hide (or are not top grain). The belt strips are hand cut by us.
